Nature & environment center ‘De ijzeren man’
De IJzeren Man is the gateway to the beautiful park De IJzeren Man. A very varied area with fens, streams, shifting sand, heathland, deciduous and coniferous forest. There are four exhibitions every year. There is a beautiful insect garden, in which there is an animal hotel and insect wall and where a stone garden has been laid out. Located in the municipality of Leudal, the Leudal nature reserve is the calling card of this region. The area is often sung about and described. Rightly so! National Park The De Meinweg
De Meinweg is of great geological significance because of the terraced landscape, which is unique in the Netherlands, with three steep transitions between the different terraces. These were created by erosion of the sediments deposited by the Rhine and Meuse in the distant past and by shifts in the earth's crust. The total height difference between the three terraces is 50 meters. The Roer valley is 30 meters above NAP and the Beatrix plateau at 80 meters. Two brook valleys have arisen across the terraces: the valley of the Boschbeek and the valley of the Roode Beek. Between these streams and stream valleys lie quiet fens and vast forests and heaths. Today there is a viper population here again.
'Brasserie De Boshut' is located directly on the edge of the Meinweg National Park. The place to rest and enjoy the range of food and drinks. In the atmospheric brasserie you can enjoy a cup of coffee with Limburgse vlaai or a delicious meal in a relaxed atmosphere.

The Maasplassen
The Maasplassen are one of the many pearls in Limburg. The Maasplassen are a vast, connected network of large and small lakes, created by gravel excavations. With an area of more than 3000 hectares, the Maasplassen are the largest contiguous water sports area in the Netherlands and therefore the ideal place for water sports! Behind the area name 'Maasplassen' lies a variety of areas with a total area of more than 750 hectares. The Maasplassen are a combination of (deep) gravel extraction ponds, flowery grasslands and dikes and shallower ponds with locally richly vegetated banks. The lakes have an important ecological function, in particular as a migration and wintering area for water birds. Banks are popular with all kinds of dragonfly species.

River park Maasvallei
River park Maasvallei extends along the rain river Maas. In winter, when there is heavy rainfall in the Ardennes, the river is given the space to leave its bed. This created an extensive network of river arms, levees, stream channels, gravel ponds, foraging areas and flood plains. 630 ha of this landscape has been set up as a nature reserve. The Maas forms the Belgian-Dutch border for 40 km from Maastricht to Kessenich. It is an area with some monumental historical places, such as Thorn and Stevensweert on the Dutch side, but also many beautiful villages on the Belgian side along the Maas.

De Maasduinen is unique because the longest 'river dune' in the Netherlands is located in the area. Brachter Wald
The 'Brachter Wald' is the eastern entrance of the municipality of Beesel from Germany. This green border crossing (not for cars) is an ideal starting point for a walk or bike ride through Meerlebroek or Brachter Wald, among others. There are also several horseback riding routes. The Witte Stein near Reuver forms one of the entrances to the Brachter Wald. Until 1996, this area was hermetically sealed as an ammunition depot for the British armed forces. Recently, however, the area has been accessible again and it is wonderful to walk here.

Brüggen Castle (DE)
This castle dates back to the year 1289. In that year, the castle was first mentioned by charter. In the year 1350, the castle was expanded into a fortress with four towers. Of the four towers, only the main hall and one tower survived. Until the 18th century, the castle was the northernmost border fortress of the Duchy of Jülich. Next to the castle is the Brüggener Mühle, which served as a corn and battle mill and remained in operation until 1955. Since 1979, the castle has housed the Hunting and Natural History Museum.

Castle Geldrop Estate
The first inhabitants we encounter in the archives are Philip and Jan van Geldrop, who built the castle around 1350. For the next two centuries the castle was owned by the Van Horne family, but it was hardly inhabited. Around 1600, Amandus van Horne settled on a residential tower right next to the castle. In 1616, he had the medieval ruins refurbished. This structure with its characteristic stepped gables now forms the middle section of the current castle; on the canal side, the year can still be found in the wall anchors.

Montfort Castle
Montfort Castle dates back to 1260 and for centuries was one of the largest castles in the Netherlands. It was built by Hendrik of Gelre, on a ridge in the watery Vlootbeek valley. This location, its polygonal ground plan and thick stone walls made it practically impregnable. After Hendrik's death in 1285, Montfort Castle belonged to the county of Gelre.
